Three new graduates with a nuclear projects firm have completed 5 weeks of practical industrial skills training with Waterside. Lewis Knotts, Jordan Egan and Luke Ross all hold engineering related degree courses, and will go on to work in design and project management for their new employer.  In order to help build their understanding of practical engineering, Waterside developed the 5 week programme consisting of mechanical skills, welding and electrical control.

The Mechanical programme covered a wide range of bench fitting skills, including filing, sawing, radius and edge work, working to tolerances for squareness, flatness, parallelism and more. Skills in milling were also covered, including surface finishes, dowelling and use of slot drills.  Time was also spent on lathes, learning about quills, centres, chucks, forming groove undercuts, working to tight turn diameter tolerances etc.  The graduates made a number of parts through the course, culminating in a two-part dice set.

For the Welding training, the graduates practiced butt and fillet welds, learnt how to properly prepare materials and equipment, gained a good understanding of the health and safety issues involved (e.g. flashes, arc burn), and became familiar with MIGTIG and MMA welding.

The final part of the training was on Electrical Maintenance and control. This started with basic electrical concepts and relevant safety legislation. The graduates then spent time on automation, creating circuit designs, building them on the control rigs, then testing, fault finding and commissioning.  Motor circuits covered included Direct-On-Line, Forward-Reverse with timer interlocks, and automatic door controls.  They then went onto Programmable Logic Control, ac inverters, and finished with closed loop temperature control.

Overall, the graduates found the intensive programme enjoyable and practically useful. We wish them all the best in their new careers.
